Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

New Community Playground at Chapman Gardens

As many members of the Kingswood community may have noticed, building work has started in the park at Chapman Gardens. This work is the initial stage of building a new playground that has been designed by students at Kingswood Public School.

Students from Mr Hazell's class we lucky enough to be chosen to design the park as part of Penrith Council's Mayoral Challenge 2016. This project is aimed at involving young people in decision making processes within their communities.

The students worked in groups to create concept designs that could be delivered within a $100,000 budget and that met the diverse needs of the Kingswood community. The designs included new play equipment, ideas for landscaping, new paths and amenities. Penrith Council then delivered three final designs for the children to vote on. The chosen design is now being built.

Council hope to finish work on the park in early December. They will then hold a community celebration and opening ceremony on Friday 9 December. Families belonging to the Kingswood Public School community will be welcome at this event.

School Athletics Carnival 2016

This year our Annual Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday 14 June at Werrington Athletics Complex commencing at approximately 9:30am.

The carnival is for all students in classes 3 – 6 and any Year 2 students turning 8 years old or who are already 8 years old in 2016.

Venue: Werrington Athletics Complex, Herbert Street, Cambridge Park

Date: Tuesday 14 June 2016

Time: Depart school 9:10am and return by 2:45pm

Transport: Bus

Cost: $8.00

What to Bring: water, food/money, school hat, warm clothes, wet weather clothes

Children will compete in separate age groups. These age groups are determined by the age they are turning THIS year. The students will compete in track events and field events. Trials have been held at school to decide the final competitors in some field events.

The last date for payment is Friday 10 June 2016. Due to a new system that the Department has put in place, we cannot accept any payments after this date.

Panthers on the Prowl - Healthy Active Lifestyles Program

We are pleased to be offering our Stage 3 classes the opportunity to be part of Panthers on the Prowl's Healthy Lifestyle Program.

Panthers on the Prowl is a community development foundation operated by Penrith Panthers. Their nine week program will be conducted at the school and will involve various activities including fitness tests, physical activities and games. The program also includes visits from dieticians and Penrith Panthers players.

This program is designed to encourage your child to make healthy lifestyle choices. It will form part of our school Personal Development, Health and Physical Education program.

Dates: Every Wednesday from 27 April to 22 June 2016

Mufti Day

Over the Easter break one of our families home was destroyed by fire and most of their possessions were either lost or damaged. All members of the family are safe. Four students of the family are members of our school community.

Next Monday 4 April we will be holding a Mufti Day to raise funds for this family. Students are able to wear mufti and donate a gold coin.

Monies raised will go towards purchasing a gift voucher for the family. Thank you for your support.

This year's Cross Country Carnival will be held on Friday 1 April 2016. Our carnival will start on the school grounds at 11.30am and finish at approximately 1.00pm.

Students should wear school uniform and change into suitable running clothes at recess.

Students will be required to sit in their house groups and cheer along their peers.

Parents are invited to come along and support our students in the carnival. We encourage you to bring your own seats as there is limited seating available.

On Monday 21^st of March Kingswood Public School will be celebrating Harmony Day which is a day to celebrate Australia's cultural diversity. It's about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

This year at Kingswood Public School, children will be encouraged to wear something representative of their culture. It could be their traditional cultural dress, colours of their country's flag or something orange.

During the day each class will be taking photos showing the diverse display of colours and clothing. Each class will also discuss what diversity means and how it can strengthen our community.

Teachers have chosen a quote on the idea of diversity and children will be involved in art activities to decorate their class quote. These displays will then be placed in the School Foyer and Library.

Our Vegetable Garden

The students of Kingswood Public School have been very productive in their use of the raised vegetable gardens to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. Some of the produce grown has been a multitude of cherry tomatoes, spinach, watermelon, cucumbers, apple cucumbers, eggplants and corn.

Ms Ochert's class have also grown wheat which they then learnt to grind into flour.

Our gratitude to Ms Fahey for her successful submission which gave us the opportunity to buy the custom made garden beds.

Tell Them From Me Surveys

In Term 1, students in Year 4-6 participated in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

Our school will also be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents' and carers' perspectives on their child's experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey will typically takes 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey needs to be conducted before 16 October 2015. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however your responses are very much appreciated. The FAQ's for the parent survey and more information is attached to this note.

During Week 2 of next term, the school Library will be open before and after school for parents and carers who would like to use the school computers to assist them in completing the survey.

The Library will be open at the following times:

Monday 12 October 8am – 8.30am and 3pm – 4pm

Thursday 15 October 8am – 8.30am and 3pm – 4pm

P and C News

The Kingswood Public School P&C meets once a month on a Tuesday afternoon in the staffroom at 2pm.

We aim to finish the meeting by 3pm. We are always joined by our Principal Norma Petrocco. Norma keeps us up to date with change concerning the school, Department Guidelines and Policies, school grounds and business.

We acknowledge that there are many parents helping the P&C in many areas such as cooking on the school BBQ, baking cake for our cake stall and donating gifts for our raffles, Mother's Day and Father's Day stalls. The P&C works so well because of this active parent involvement.

Uniform Shop

The P&C have a second hand uniform shop which is open every Monday afternoon from 2:30pm - 3:00pm.

The uniform shop sells both summer and winter uniforms for the price of $1 per item. The sizes range from a 6 - 16.

Due to health regulations school hats are not sold at the uniform shop.

Thank you to those whom have donated unwanted uniform to our shop, without these we would not have the great success that we have.

School Banking

The Commonwealth School Banking Program is every Tuesday.

The P&C receives $5 for every new account that is opened as well as 5% of the total deposit each week. If you are interested in opening an account you can do so by going into the Commonwealth Bank.

There is a rewards system in place for those children that make a deposit each week. For every deposit made each week the children will receive a dollarmite token, once they have 10 tokens they are able to chose a prize which is handed out at the school assembly. Deposit can be as little as five cents.

We currently have 181 children participating in the school banking which is a fantastic effort.

The selection of books at our Book Fair will include a wide range of quality books from the best Australian and overseas authors & illustrators. All books are discounted. Our school benefits by receiving a commission, which we can use to improve our resources.

Stage 1 Science and Technology

Students in Stage 1 will be learning about Food in Science and Technology and procedures in English this semester. As a part of their learning we will be making different types of food in class that the students will then be eating.

Food created may include:

Fairy Bread
Vita Weats with margarine and Vegemite
Fruit with shredded coconut
Bruschetta with tomato, olive oil, basil and salt and pepper
Bread rolls with dried fruit, seeds and herbs
Butter (or non-dairy substitute "Nuttelex")

Parents are advised that the school cannot guarantee the food will be nut-free.

Early Stage 1 Incursion

Early Stage 1 are provided with an incubator containing chicken eggs to observe in the classroom for two weeks. The students have the opportunity to watch as these eggs hatch and the young chicks grow. Featherdale Wildlife Park keepers are also bringing some Australian animals to the school and talking to the students about these animals' habitat, diet and other interesting features. The students will then be given an opportunity to touch these unique creatures. This experience with living things is an important part of the teaching and learning program.

Parents are advised to bring a chair or blanket to sit on as there is no seating available.

Students will be required to sit in their house groups and cheer along with their peers.

School Musical

Our school musical "Once Upon A Time" will be held on Wednesday 31st July (night performance) and Thursday 1st August 2013 (matinee and night performances). Tickets are currently on sale at the school $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12.

Please note that there will be no cameras or recording devices permitted in the performances. There is also no prams allowed in the hall so small children will need to sit on a parents lap or pay for a ticket to sit on a chair.

Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Competition

Former student, Linda Wainwright, has re-created a class album for the competition on the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Facebook application and she has been selected as one of the winners.

This means that both Linda and Kingswood Primary School, have won an Apple iPad 2 (16GB with wi-fi). As well as this, youwill receive a Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures pack to continue the hard work of Colgate in improving the oral health of children through their education and prevention program.

Early Stage 1 - Toys

Early Stage One are currently studying ‘Moving' during our Science and Technology lessons. The students have been very busy learning about the different types of movement and where objects get their energy from.

The next part of our unit involves a series of experiments with a variety of toys. We are asking for your support by sending one toy that moves to school with your child on the date listed below. The toys will be stored safely for the day and will only be used during the lesson. Students will not be allowed to take their toys into the playground.

ES1C students should bring their moving toy to school on Thursday 30^th May.

Mrs Clarke on Maternity Leave

Friday 24^thMay will be Mrs Clarke's last day before going on Maternity Leave for the rest of the year. Mrs Clarke will return at the start of the 2014 school year.

For the remainder of this term, Mrs Robyn Prentice will be taking responsibility of ES1C. Mrs Prentice is an experienced teacher and has worked regularly at the school for a number of years. Mrs Prentice will continue with the teaching and learning program set by Mrs Clarke so the children's learning will not be compromised.

We are awaiting confirmation of Mrs Clarke's replacement for Terms 3 and 4. A letter will be sent home to parents as soon as this has been finalised.

We wish Mrs Clarke the best of luck with the safe arrival of her baby.

Tennis Gala Day

On Wednesday 29^th May students from Early Stage 1, Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 will have the opportunity to participate in a Tennis Gala Day run by Elton Stoney, the head of coaching at Nepean District Tennis.

The Tennis in Schools Program is a program that introduces children to tennis at a young age. It is delivered with the intention to help with the development of gross motor skills such as hand-eye coordination and balance.

The students will participate in a 20 minute session on the multipurpose court with all equipment supplied.

There is no cost for this activity.

District Cross Country Carnival

The Penrith District PSSA Cross Country Carnival will be held on Friday 10 May 2013 at Jamison Park.

The cost for the event is $14.00 which will cover the cost of transport and carnival entry. As most students will require travel by bus, all students going to the carnival will be charged the same fee.

Students are required to wear school uniform including their school broad brim hat to the carnival. Students also need to bring: a warm jumper, a raincoat, a towel or blanket to sit on, a change of shorts to run in, food, drinks and something quiet to do between races. Please note students are not allowed to bring anything electronic (including mobile phones). They are also not permitted to play any ball games or wander off from the designated area for our school.

School Cross Country Carnival

Due to the inclement weather, students have been informed that a decision regarding the carnival will not be made until 11am. So even if it is raining in the morning, the carnival may still proceed, depending on how heavy it is prior to starting.

Therefore, all students have been advised to bring a spare change of clothes, spare shoes and a plastic bag in which to put any dirty shoes.

The P and C BBQ will STILL be held regardless of the running of the Cross Country.

Kingswood Public School Cross Country Carnival will be held on Friday 5 April. All students aged 8 years in 2013 and older are invited to participate in this district qualifying event.

Students should ensure they have ample drink (water is recommended) as well as suitable running attire (no singlets), sunscreen and their school hats.

The event will be held from 11.30am to 1pm approx. Any parents wishing to attend are advised that there is not a lot of seating and are encouraged to bring their own to avoid disappointment.

A new ‘Parent and Carer Reference Section' of the School Library will be opening in Term 3 2012. A selection of books is available for borrowing by parents and caregivers of our students. The ‘Parent and Carer Reference Section' includes a variety of reference material such as books on raising young children, developing social skills in young children and helping children at home with reading. You will also find books that suggest activities that you can enjoy with your children such as cooking, art and craft and bedtime stories.

Many physical activities help young people to get on with others and to learn about cooperating, communicating, being tolerant, helping others and having fun together. With this in mind, we at Kingswood Public School will be participating in the Sports in Schools Australia programs.
